From Council Estates to Dinner Plates

The story about women from the Tower Hamlets council estates getting involved in hospitality is a really inspiring story and one we think would make for an interesting documentary. We recommend working with a production company on a behind-the-scenes documentary that showcases these womens’ journeys, provides insight into their backgrounds and how Raan is transforming the lives of women in the community.

There are quite a few production companies in East London that we could approach to work with for filming and post-production of the documentary. The production company will be able to help outline the objectives, key messages and the storylines we want to capture.

We can start by fleshing out the storyline as a first port of call. This should focus on the womens’ journeys from the very beginning and follow them throughout their transition of starting out in the council estates to forging careers in hospitality and agriculture. We can explore their challenges, backgrounds, aspirations and the impact the apprentice programmes are having on their lives.

We’ll capture the women as they learn about regenerative agriculture, learning cooking techniques through the apprenticeship programme and how they are learning skills to be front-of-house staff.

We would conduct interviews with the women and key team members at Raan involved in the project. It would be really impactful to record the womens’ personal stories, motivations and experiences.

The documentary can additionally focus on Raan’s commitment to sustainability, with a particular focus on Iqbal, his own personal journey to Raan and why he wanted to start the project. It’ll be important to highlight how the regenerative produce is used in the restaurant’s menu.

We would estimate the documentary taking at least a year to film, plus 3-6 months post production. It would be very dependent on if we work with an independent production company, or work with the likes of BBC or ITV to produce it.

Once the documentary is finalised, we’d recommend hosting a debut screening at the restaurant, inviting press, community leaders, those who supported its creation and the general public. We can also submit the documentary for awards.
